Drawing Withdrawal

So I was in and around upstate New York yesterday. Stopped in New Paltz, a quirky college town, at a great little art shop in hopes that they would carry a certain pen that I use since all of mine are officially now broken. (sob!) Had a great conversation with the shopkeeper who said, "Gosh, there only about 37 people in the world who use those pens, and you're one of them". And there it is. Either I wait two weeks for my online order to come in or I feed my drawing addiction with a temporary pen replacement. This guy, highly knowledgeable about art supplies and the like, recommended a little pen called the Slicci. I've heard of this pen many a time, so I thought I'd give it a whirl (plus, um, it was only $2.50 compared to $40). It has an awesome fine point, consistent flow of ink, but it does tend to bleed... Not my first choice, but who am I kidding? I neeeeeeed to draw. So here is my first drawing made with a Slicci:

Such sad news about Steve Jobs. For me it's like hearing about Jim Henson, Roald Dahl, or John Hughes leaving us. I literally grew up with Apple. From the green screens of Macintosh computers in Kindergarten, the wake of the internet and heavy towers in middle school, futuristic self-contained iMacs in high school, to iPhones, iPads, and a thin, flatscreen computer that allows me to work from home and accomplish the unimaginable. Thank you, Mr. Jobs, for everything.

Lately, I've been obsessing more and more over images of farms, barns, and country landscapes. It may be due to the fact that I've spent the entire summer changing the way I view food and appreciating more where it comes from. Today marks one month of eating only whole foods (and grass-fed, pastured, organic, local, absolutely whenever possible). I truly admire the work of farmers and I created this little print as an ode to all that they do.

It appears that the last time I used my acrylics was several years ago since half of my colors were dried out, but I made due. Painting is such a different medium than drawing -- it makes me a little frantic. My level of patience for painting is maybe .01% of that of when I am drawing. Crazy. The Renegade Craft Fair 2011 in Brooklyn was awesome, possum! So there was a little rain the first day and it actually got pretty cold standing out there(!), but the dedicated supporters of handmade came out anyway and eventually made the sun come out... yay!

With it being birthday month, Easter kinda crept up on me! I made my boyfriend do an impromptu DIY Easter egg project this morning and thought I'd share in case you're down to the wire with decorating your eggs, too.

1. I only had brown eggs to use (white eggs are preferable since they're very easy to dye, but you can still do a lot with brown eggs, so don't worry if that's all you have). Make sure your egg has been cleaned. Have one clean bowl on hand for the egg contents and a clean pushpin.

2. Take a pushpin and poke a little hole at both ends of your egg. (You'll have two holes in total -- at the long ends of your egg)

3. This part may sound gross, but is painless, I assure you. Choose one end of your egg and blow out the contents through the other end.

4. Once your egg is hollow, rinse and dry off. And voila, you have an empty eggshell to work with. I chose to use Sharpie markers since they're pretty easy. You could go nuts with glue and glitter, buttons, crayons, paint, etc., but I kept it simple since the bf was working with me today and has a short attention span for arts & crafts.

The Martha Stewart Show

Had a blast yesterday with some crafty gal pals at the live taping of the Martha Stewart Show. I've always wanted to see her tv kitchen and craft room in person! And though I've seen Martha in person numerous times before, it was so interesting to see her "perform" so effortlessly before a camera and live audience. I really don't know how she does it, but she's truly an inspiration for getting so much done in a day. I'll have what she's having, please! ;)

Five Things with Miniature Rhino!

So I'm a little behind the times when it comes to announcing some awesome news on the craft front. So here it goes. I'll be joining forces this year at the Renegade Craft Fair (Brooklyn) with the wonderfully talented Miniature Rhino, hoorah! Yup, we'll be splitting a booth and I cannot wait to see what we come up with for display/theme. Renegade is my favorite show, but it's also such a huge endeavor. Two days back to back and setting up/breaking down each day can seriously wear you out. So I look forward to our collaboration this year mucho mucho! We're both actually featured on Renegade's site this year (I'm top left, she's bottom left), so check it out, yo, and save the date: Saturday & Sunday, June 11 & 12, 2011.

Also, a few weeks back I interviewed Jessica on the {NewNew} blog in my classic Five Things manner, so I'm doing a little reposting here:

It is a delightful honor to present today's Five Things with Jessica Marquez, the ever-so-talented gal behind Miniature Rhino. Not only does Jessica have such an interesting Etsy shop full of curiosities and hand-embroidered goods, but she happens to be absolutely dyn-a-mite in person. Yup yup, full on crafty girl crush.

1. Jessica, where did you come up with the name of your shop, Miniature Rhino?

Miniature Rhino comes from the imagination of my young cousin. Dr. Rhino was her imaginary friend and dentist(!). After a few real life cavities she broke it off and became besties with Dr. Penguin. The name "Dr. Rhino" stuck with me and I'd scribble it on notes and use it to sign my name on things I made. It turned into Miniature Rhino. The name for me is playful and speaks to the curious places our imaginations can take us.

2. What are some of the top influences of your work?

Science and Art are huge influences on my work and just general interests. But this jumble of ideas rises to the surface too... Victorian aesthetics, mementos and remembrance pieces, miniatures, Joseph Cornell, vintage needle work, photography, especially vernacular, John Baldessari, Ann Hamilton, book arts, Annie Dillard, collecting, cabinets of curiosity, food politics, and more more more...

3. What's the cutest thing in the world and why?

Pretty much my parent's dog, Buddy Lee. He was not treated the best before he came to my parents, so it takes him time to trust people. But his love is true. He lives for you and wants nothing more than to be snuggled up by your side at all time. And just take a look at his face, come on.

4. What do you love most about your job?

My job is so DIY. Blows me away when I think about it - I'm my own boss, I love it! I was recently featured in InStyle Magazine and this month, ReadyMade Magazine. Me! I get silly happy sometimes when I can step away from the stress and complications of running my own small business and see that I'm growing, learning and accomplishing a lot just by the work of my own two hands. Once I can get health insurance - this job will be perfect!

5. What are your most favorite things about your current workspace and its functionality?

Ha! My workspace needs help. I'm trying my best to organize it and am constantly changing things around, but it's still a "before". I'm lucky enough to have a studio to work out of from my apartment. It has french doors to the living room so at night I can close up shop. It's my own mini craft store and Miniature Rhino headquarters.

Snow, Museum, Dino Bones, and Taxidermy

My view right now.

New York City has had what seems like a record number of snowstorms this season! Personally I love it. For anyone having to trek in slush or shovel heaps, I do feel for you. I've had my share of shoveling in the past and am even more grateful and happy to not have to do it right now. hee hee. It's much more enjoyable just watching it fall and working inside being surrounded by white.

Yesterday I had the pleasure of meeting up with fellow illustrator, Michelle of My Zoetrope, at the Museum of Natural History to take in some inspiration and to cure a small case of cabin fever. I've been working what seems like day and night this week --- and with weather like this, I haven't been too motivated to get out too often.

Highlights of our field trip:

Pretty cool, huh? Taxidermy is such an incredible art form!

And of course, I love me some dinosaur bones. I don't know why, but skeletons seriously fascinate me and I think they're uber cool. Okay, it's back to work for me...

Living in New York City has had its ups and downs over the years. But sometimes when you can find the sweet spot to call home, everything just seems to fall into place. I've moved four times in the past nine years, and this is the first time I'm genuinely thrilled to call home. The view from my office nook changes everyday and most recently it's been looking like Antarctica out there! I guess now is a good a time as any to express in writing just how grateful I am to have bounced around enough times to land here now. Having a room with a view is like food for the soul!

This guy was quite the doozy to create. Sometimes I'm lucky and I can just draw something from start to finish -- always with unpredictable results, but normally the lines just seem to flow out somehow. So... yayyyy! The Union Square Holiday Market opened today! You can find the {NewNew} Etsy booth on the South West side right near the fountain and Gandhi statue ;)

Little Miss Sunshine.

Well I had a fun-filled weekend of scary movie marathons, eating tiny chocolates, dressing up, and briefly checking out the Halloween Parade in downtown Manhattan. My sense was that most people started the festivities as early as Thursday night. Heck, even last weekend we went all the the way to Philadelphia just to check out the "scariest haunted house in America" at the Eastern State Penitentiary...

Anyway, so, as promised, here's me as Olive from Little Miss Sunshine asking, "Do you like ice cream?".

I went all out -- bought a jersey from the children's section, cut the arms and seams off, and hand sewed yellow vintage trim all around:

Then I bought some denim shorts and snipped the bottoms off to get that fringe:

I also acquired a red head sweat band, red Converse high tops (which I am so excited to wear on a regular basis), some rainbow colored bracelets, and even a pair of granny glasses. And now it's already November and Thanksgiving is around the corner, sheesh!

So what will you be this Halloween? Though I am not one to plan my costume months ahead of time, for some reason this year, I've been looking forward to dressing up since last Halloween! Perhaps it's because last Halloween was pretty low key and my Nancy Drew costume was made in 15 minutes -- fully comprised of regular clothes from my wardrobe, and of course one large magnifying glass. I don't even think anyone noticed I was dressed up even with my 40s cloak and hat on and other vintage touches that completed the look.

So... this year I definitely got things started a bit earlier and am so stoked to be none other than... Olive from Little Miss Sunshine! Hopefully someone will take a photo of me and I will be sure to post the look I came up with ;)

Barbara Billingsley aka the voice of "Nanny" in Muppet Babies passed away this weekend. Muppet Babies is certainly my favorite cartoon of all time. :D You may all know Barbara for playing June Cleaver in Leave it to Beaver, but for me, her role as Nanny definitely influenced my life quite a bit. As well as this scene from Airplane:

So this weekend was a blast at the first Maker Faire in New York -- the {NewNew} had one booth teaching people of all ages and levels to knit & crochet while a few of us from the {NewNew} had handmade goodies for sale at the Bust Craftacular! So much going on -- here's just a few pics I managed to take while on little breaks.
